Malaysia VEP Registration Process: A Step-by-Step Guide

Alas, as announced on 28th May 2024 by Malaysia’s Transport Minister Anthony Loke, foreign-registered vehicles entering Malaysia from Singapore by land would be required to use a VEP from 1st October 2024. The deadline however has been temporarily extended as Malaysia’s Road Transport Department (JPJ) understands that there have been delays where vehicle owners have already registered for their VEP but have yet to get their applications approved, or have yet to receive their RFID tag.

Vehicle drivers who have yet to install their VEP will be issued reminders before leaving Malaysia. Motorists who fail to register and/or install their VEP may be fined up to RM2000 or jailed for up to 6 months!

What is a VEP and what is it for?

A VEP (Vehicle Entry Permit) is a RFID tag that can be used to pay for road charges and tolls in Malaysia, as well as the RM20 when entering Malaysia. It can also be used for tracking purposes. This tracking allows the Malaysian government to identify outstanding payments for a vehicle before it leaves Malaysia.

How to register for a VEP?

We’ve created a step-by-step guide to help you out with your VEP application. From the registration of the VEP, linking your Touch ‘n Go eWallet to your RFID, and the installation procedure of the RFID tag, this guide hopes to shed light on what you would require as well as what information is needed in the various steps.

Without further ado, let’s begin!

6) Select your preferred option, whether to have it mailed to your registered address in Singapore or to collect and install your tag in Singapore or Malaysia

6b) You would receive a confirmation with your vehicle details on the next page as shown below:

6c) Continue and proceed to payment. Upon successful payment, you would be transferred to the receipt page (In the event that you receive an “error” after you’ve made payment, try refreshing the page and it should reflect that payment is successful)

*Do not panic if you see an error. Try refreshing the page if you see this error page after you’ve submitted your payment

9) You would be notified via e-mail once your tag has been shipped, and you would be able to track the postage status of your tag

10) Upon receipt of the RFID tag (mine took 20 days from the date it was at Singapore until actual receipt of the tag via post), follow the instructions provided to install the tag on your vehicle

*Note: This RFID tag is the HEADLAMP version. If you prefer to have the WINDSCREEN version, DO NOT INSTALL & ACTIVATE this tag. 11) After installation, take a picture of your vehicle with the tag installed (vehicle plate number should be clearly visible together with the tag) and proceed to http://vepams.jpj.gov.my to acknowledge receipt of and to register your tag by keying the serial number. Lastly, upload the photo taken

12) Once submitted, await the activation of your tag. This process took around 20 minutes after submission for us, but it may vary.

13) You would receive an e-mail once your tag has been successfully activated and you should also receive a notification from your TnG app stating that your RFID has been activated:

14) Do remember to add any other drivers that may also be driving the registered vehicle into Malaysia by logging into your account at https://vep.jpj.gov.my/

7) Once the deregistration process has been completed, you can proceed to update your vehicle details on http://vep.jpj.gov.my as shown in step 4 in Malaysia VEP registration process (For private vehicle owners of “new” vehicles) *Note – As seen in the picture above, although the status is “Rejected”, I managed to update my vehicle details, so just keep on trying every now and then to update your vehicle details as they may not have updated the deregistration status!

Conclusion

Although the entire process from registration to installation of the VEP tag may seem daunting to some, it really isn’t. However, it may require a reasonable amount of patience as registration, verification and various other processes take time (not mentioning the fact that there has been a surge of applications during the past few months!).

Do note that the validity of a RFID tag is 5 years, so be sure to set a reminder for yourself before your current tag expires! We currently do not know what the process of replacing expiring tags would be like and hopefully the process would have been streamlined by the time we get there.

In the event that you need help, you may visit the office in Singapore at the following address for your queries:

MY VEP Pte Ltd

186 Woodlands Industrial Park E5, #03-01, S757515

Phone: +60 3-7941 2888

**Note: While at the centre to change the headlamp tag to the windscreen tag, a fellow vehicle user said that the office actually provides the entire registration from scratch at a fee of SGD$159 and it would take the office only 1 day! Unfortunately we were not able to verify this, but if you happen to be at the office for other queries, you could try asking the friendly staff at the centre!

We hope that this guide has helped you with the application of your RFID tag and would love to hear from you via e-mail if you have any feedback or tips regarding the registration process!

5) What is the difference between the headlamp and windscreen versions of the VEP RFID tag?

The main difference between a Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP) RFID tag for the headlamp and one for the windscreen is where they are attached to the car:

  • Headlamp: A smaller, clear tag that is attached to the left headlamp of the car. It would be on the exterior of the vehicle.

  • Windscreen: A blue tag that is applied to the top middle area (near the rearview mirror) of the car’s windscreen. It would be in the interior of the vehicle.
